Photos of the Bazaar

Thanks to Rawan's mum for emailing me these photos from the
bazaar. This stall was a particularly crazy one - by the end of the afternoon they had worked so hard that they looked like they'd taken a bath in ice-cream... there was stuff everywhere!!!

Running a business that involves selling food or drinks is always really hard work.

The stress and strain of business

The students of 4s are learning all about the stress and strain of starting and running a real business as the Performance Assessment Task gets closer and closer. They have created their companies, chosen what goods or services to offer and started to locate their suppliers. They have looked at all the issues that surround demand and thought about how they can create demand for their goods and services. Today they have been thinking about supply and all of the complications that are connected to it. They decided that they need to answer the following questions to make sure they are totally organised:

1. Who will get the money for our supplies?
2. Where will we get our supplies?
3. Who will get the supplies?
4. What kind of things will we supply?
5. How will we get our supplies?
6. When will we get our supplies?
7. Who will we supply to?
8. How much money will our supplies cost?
9. Do we have enough money for our supplies?

They have been working really hard to try and answer all of these important questions.

The Visit to BRAC

We visited the World's largest NGO (non-governmental organisation) on Wednesday. BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) has been helping Bangladeshi people overcome challenges since 1972. We were interested to find out about how they help people become employed, or to set up small businesses. We were due to visit their large handicrafts complex in Manikganj, but it didn't work out. Instead, we visited their Diary Plant and Nursery in Gazipur. How did the trip help us with this Unit of Inquiry? Make comments to answer.

Small businesses around ISD

We went just outside the gates of Bashundhara today, to talk to and take pictures of people running businesses. Here is a photo-montage of the people we met, and the goods and services they were selling.

A definition of 'goods'

We wanted a definition of goods that we could work with in the Unit of Inquiry. We got into three large groups so that we could get lots of ideas and improve our group-working ability. We discussed our own ideas, then started to think about what the whole group agreed on. Finally, we came up with three definitions:

1. A good is a thing that we need or want.
2. Something that we need.
3. Something that is useful to us.

Advertising

We will use this Unit of Inquiry to study advertising - the use of persuasive language, imagery, design and the effect that advertising has on demand.

We started off by using a fantastic site that Ms. Grant found, called Skillswise, that has a section all about using adjectives to describe people, places and things to make them more attractive. Click here to get to the site. Have a go at all the sections: factsheet, quiz, game and the worksheet. By the end you'll know what adjectives are and how to use them.

Ashfaq and Henrica went on a tour of the building with the camera, and took photos of the goods in the photo-montage above.
